Chapter 30
âWant some cake, Lori? One of the ladies from church dropped it off yesterday. Itâs homemade red velvet.â
Loriâs eyes went wide. âIâm stuffed from the lasagna, but I donât think I can turn down a piece of that.â
I laughed and served up three pieces of cake for the table.
âHow long are you here for?â Matthew asked before taking a bite of cake. He smiled, pointing to the red velvet slice with his fork and nodded his approval.
âI have to head back tonight. Iâm still not finished Christmas shopping and Mom wants me to go with her tomorrow.â She took a bite of the dessert and moaned. âThis is wonderful. Better than Momâs. And you can never tell her.â
I laughed. âI wonât. So whatâs your big news?â
Lori set her fork down and looked between me and Matthew. âI got a job. A dream job actually. Itâs being an assistant to a really rich guy in California. His last assistant is a friend of mine and sheâs getting married and moving to France, so he needs someone.â She sat back and waited for our reaction.
âDoes it pay good?â Matthew arched his brow.
Lori smiled and nodded. âSix figures starting out plus an apartment near his house.â
My mouth dropped. âSix figures. Wow, thatâs great!â
Lori clapped her hands together. âI know! And Iâll be living by the beach, which is my dream while getting paid a ton by some old rich guy.â She shrugged. âWho knows, maybe heâll fall in love with me and ask me to marry him.â
I snorted. âLori, you wouldnât marry someone you were not in love with.â
She arched her brow. âIâve been in love too many times. I donât believe in love any more. It never lasts. But money does.â
Matthew barked out a laugh. âNot if you blow it, it doesnât.â
Lori shrugged. âAnyway, Iâm moving to California in January.â She reached over and squeezed my hand. âIâm glad I got to see you before I leave.â
I nodded. âMaybe we can come out and see you. I mean, Matthewâs parents live in California.â
âOh yeah, what part?â Lori took another bite.
âMontecito.â Matthew said before finishing off his cake.
Lori gasped. âYouâre kidding! Thatâs where Iâm moving.â
My eyes widened. âReally. What a wonderful coincidence.â
Matthew nodded. âMaybe we will have to make a trip out there. Who knows, maybe we can talk your grandparents into going with us.â
That night as I lay in bed I was filled with a mix of emotions. I was sad but excited for Lori. It seemed like her dreams were finally coming true. I was grateful for Matthewâs position at church and my job, but sad that it seemed that I was living my adult life without my grandparents to see all the great things that were happening for us.
As I drifted off to sleep, I wondered what else was about to change for us as well.
